Visit to CNH2 by the FCH2RAIL project consortium

The CNH2 leads the integration and homologation tests of the PowerPack of the train, being in charge of the characterization tests of the fuel cells designing and assembling the test benches for it. These fuel cells will be integrated into the bi-modal regional train prototype retrofitted under the FCH2RAIL project.

Puertollano, June 3, 2022 – During the days 1 and 2 of June the partners of the project FCH2RAIL have met in Puertollano (Ciudad Real, Spain) to continue advancing in the planned tasks of the project that aims, among other objectives, develop a prototype bimodal hydrogen train.

The consortium members had the opportunity to visit the CNH2 facilities, where the PowerPack integration and approval tests are being carried out. It consists of a scalable, modular and multi-purpose hybrid fuel cell system applicable to different railway applications (regional trains, freight locomotives and shunting locomotives).

These tests are the fundamental preliminary step for the subsequent demonstration to be carried out on the retrofitted bimodal regional train itself, which is being worked on, which will take the electricity from the catenary in the electrified sections and use the above system as an energy source in the non-electrified sections, supported by an innovative power management system throughout the train to minimise power and energy consumption.

Other objectives of the project led by the CNH2 are the development of the prototype refueling point that will service the prototype of the train and the work package of development of European regulations for the introduction of hydrogen in the railway sector.
FCH2RAIL is a project funded by the Clean Hydrogen Partnership that began on 1 January 2021 and has a total duration of 48 months.
