The National Hydrogen Centre hosted the closing ceremony of the Complementary Plan for Renewable Energy and Hydrogen, a strategic initiative that has mobilised more than €92 million to promote research, technological development and innovation in renewable hydrogen and sustainable energy in Spain.
As national coordinator, the CNH2 has played a key role in coordinating a programme jointly governed and co-financed by the Ministry of Science, Innovation and Universities and ten autonomous communities (Aragon, Asturias, Canary Islands, Cantabria, Castile-La Mancha, Castile and León, Extremadura, Madrid, Navarre and the Basque Country), with the collaboration of the CSIC.
The Plan has covered the entire renewable hydrogen value chain, with the aim of establishing it as a solution for the electrification of the national energy system and the decarbonisation of transport and industry.
Among the milestones achieved, the following stand out:
– The development of pilot and pre-commercial systems using national technology.
– Advances in safe storage, refuelling stations and new energy carriers.
– Applications of hydrogen in strategic sectors such as energy-intensive industry, heavy transport, the naval and aeronautical fields, as well as in residential and port environments.
– Support for the creation of the Iberian Centre for Energy Storage Research (CIIAE).
In this regard, the scientific and socio-economic impact of the Plan is reflected in more than 185 projects launched, around 180 contracts with companies, 11 new patents registered and 850 dissemination actions, including 230 high-impact publications. In addition, 250 professionals have been trained and 300 highly skilled jobs have been created, contributing significantly to strengthening the national innovation ecosystem in hydrogen and energy.
The closing ceremony was attended by national and regional political authorities, including the Secretary of State for Science, Innovation and Universities, Juan Cruz, and the Minister of Education, Culture and Sport of the Regional Government of Castile-La Mancha, Amador Pastor, as well as ministers from the autonomous communities involved, reaffirming the institutional commitment to research, innovation and energy transition.
