Project Aim
To develop a global and accessible database to provide information on the lives and scientific contributions in the field of chemistry of scientists who have been made invisible because of their race/ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, different physical abilities, etc. The project is named in honour of the African-American chemist and scientist Alice Ball, who developed an effective treatment for leprosy during the 20th century. Her name has also helped us to devise the design of the website, a world ball in which the scientists included in the website will be classified according to their nationality. This will make it easier to search for these scientists by simply clicking on the different countries.
This project will be the first to cover and highlight the work of these invisible scientists, emphasising how their contributions have changed not only the field of chemistry, but also society. This is a challenging project that we want to continue for many years to come. The money from the Inclusion and Diversity Fund will help us to launch the first version of the website and get this exciting project off the ground. In future stages, we want to reach out to new partners, such as universities, governments and other organisations, to expand The Ball World and put the contributions of these diverse and talented neglected scientists in different fields of science on the map.
CNH2 Tasks
For the first phase of the project, with the funding provided by the Inclusion and Diversity Fund, CNH2 will contract an IT company for the design of the website and its maintenance, at least during the six months of the project. CNH2 will collaborate and coordinate different groups and organisations that will participate in the project, e.g. LGTBIQ+ organisations, feminist organisations, etc., and will carry out the selection and validation of the selected profiles to be included in the website. The deadline will be subject to the time given by the IT company to complete the work. Once the two tasks have been combined, the website can be launched.
For the second phase of the project, we want to open the website to the public. Adding new scientists to our world can be done through a collaborative project between CNH2, the organisations involved, one or two university students (final project) and people who share their ideas with us. People from the scientific community can send us names/stories of other forgotten scientists we have not heard of to be included in our world ball.
During the duration of the project, CNH2 will contact more organisations and groups related to the project’s theme that may be interested in participating, as well as seeking funding to extend the duration of the project and, in future phases, to include scientists from other fields of science such as physics, mathematics, etc.
