It is a recently created laboratory, which activity is focused on research, development and integration of biotechnological applications of Hydrogen and Fuel Cells , with the aim of promoting and boosting their development within the national and international energy sector.
RESEARCH LINES
- H2 production from biological processes (BIO-H2), by means of different technologies, paying special attention to the anaerobic fermentation processes of industrial waste and microbial electrolysis.
- Study and development of microbial fuel cells of different types: sedimentary piles, integrated systems with plant species, Ceramic Fuel cells, etc.
AREAS
- Conditioning Area. Aimed at the preparation, conditioning, conservation and growth of microbial populations.
- Design and Assembly Area. It focuses on the design and construction of bioreactors for H2 production or bioelectrochemical systems for the production of electrical energy.
- Electrochemical Characterisation Area. This area is for the characterisation of bioelectrochemical systems by means of classical techniques: polarisation and power curves, chronoamperometry and chronopontencymetry, voltammetry (cyclic and linear), electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, etc.
EQUIPMENT
- Multichannel Potentiostat-Galvanostat (6 channels) with FRA modules for performing electrochemical techniques as well as Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy.
- Microbial fuel cells of different technologies.
- Cultivation cooker
- Bio-reactors of 2 litres volume, jacketed, with agitation and control of operating conditions.
- Multiparametric photometer with COD determination.
- Biological safety cabinet for handling and conditioning bacterial cultures.
SERVICIOS
- Research, design and development of biotechnology-based systems for hydrogen production.
- Research, design and development of microbial fuel cells (different types).
- Electrochemical characterisation of bioelectrochemical devices (microbial fuel cells and microbial electrolysis cells).
- Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) analysis for the characterisation of biofilms, including the preparation of biological samples.
- Studies on the revalorization of organic waste for H2 production or as fuel in microbial fuel cells.
