Every 8th October, the international scientific community celebrates World Hydrogen Day<\/strong>. The aim of this is to highlight the importance of a fundamental chemical element for industrial developments that allow for less dependence on fossil fuels and, therefore, a reduction in the amount of atmospheric pollutants harmful to human health that are emitted with its use, as well as greenhouse gases.<\/p>\n

The origin of the event dates back to the year 2015. The US Fuel Cell and Hydrogen Energy Association (FCHEA) instituted it on the 8th because of the atomic mass of hydrogen, which is 1.008 (10\/08 on the calendar: in American English, as opposed to British English, the month is placed before the day).<\/p>\n

At the National Hydrogen Centre we work to research, develop and innovate in all aspects that involve the hydrogen value chain (production, storage, transformation, distribution, application and technological implementation), as well as carrying out dissemination and training work to make H2 and fuel cell technologies known to the scientific community and the general public. Therefore, and in commemoration of World Hydrogen Day, we interviewed Luis Jos\u00e9 Camacho Parrilla, Engineer of the Applications Unit of our centre.<\/strong><\/p>\n

-Hydrogen is the most abundant element in the universe. It is the main component of stars and many planets. Many people know this, and, reading about the processes of obtaining green hydrogen by electrolysis (which requires water), wonder why H2 cannot be obtained directly from the medium on planet Earth. Why is H2 so rare in its pure form?<\/p>\n

The reason lies in its properties. Hydrogen is a very light element, so it tends to rise to the upper layers of the atmosphere until it reaches space. It is therefore very difficult to find naturally occurring deposits of pure hydrogen on Earth. It is usually found as part of other organic and inorganic compounds.<\/strong><\/p>\n

However, in recent years, several deposits of so-called \u2018white or golden\u2019 hydrogen have been found. Some of these reserves are found in the United States, Canada, Finland, the Philippines, Australia, Brazil, Oman, Turkey and Mali, among others.<\/strong><\/p>\n

-Currently, this green hydrogen accounts for less than 5% of the hydrogen obtained in industry. What measures can be taken to encourage the business sector to promote green H2?<\/p>\n

Firstly, it is essential to increase public funding for projects aimed at implementing the technology needed to produce this green hydrogen, and to facilitate access to this type of aid not only for large companies, but also for SMEs. It is essential that companies have access to aid to enable them to design and build prototypes and pilot plants, which will help them to evaluate the implementation of these technologies in their production systems in order to validate their operation and to be able to redesign their production model in the medium and long term. Given the lack of knowledge of the potential of these technologies for the future, it is also important to encourage private investment so that companies are willing to take the risk of ceasing to use fossil fuel-based systems, which have a very high degree of maturity and reliability, and thus begin the transition towards the use of this type of sustainable energy sources.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The European institutions are working hard to increase aid to those companies that really want to invest in this type of technology, to the point that this year the government has announced the launch of an aid programme of up to 2.3 billion euros from European funds, aimed at financing projects that promote the use of renewable energies. Of the total aid, it is estimated that just over half will be earmarked to finance projects dedicated to the production and use of green hydrogen.<\/strong><\/p>\n

-What is the current state of H2 applications and production in Spain, and in which sectors is the greatest commitment being made to the integration of H2 and fuel cell technologies?

\nIn Spain, hydrogen technologies are booming, to the point that our country has participated in international projects aimed at boosting and promoting the development of hydrogen. In terms of production, there is still a long way to go, as the use of hydrogen as an energy vector is at very low levels compared to many energy sources. In addition, of all the hydrogen produced in Spain, only a small percentage is green hydrogen obtained from renewable energy sources.<\/strong><\/p>\n

In terms of applications, in Spain the industrial sector continues to be the one that consumes the most hydrogen, as this element constitutes an essential raw material in many of the operations carried out in refineries and other chemical and metallurgical industries. It is also possible to find the presence of this element in other sectors such as transport.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The latter, the transport sector, is one of the sectors in which the greatest efforts are being made to integrate hydrogen technologies in Spain. The need to decarbonise this sector, which represents one of the main sources of environmental pollution, has motivated the development of vehicles powered by fuel cells, to such an extent that it is already possible to find vehicles using this technology on the market.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Over the last few years, at the National Hydrogen Centre we have had the pleasure of actively participating in the development of some pioneering projects in the development of this technology. These include the FCH2Rail project, aimed at developing a fuel cell-powered train and a portable refuelling station for recharging this train, as well as the H2Ports project, in which important milestones have been achieved, such as the recharging of the first fuel cell-powered vehicle in a port.<\/strong><\/p>\n

-Hydrogen could be involved in up to 12% of global energy consumption by 2050, according to the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA). In addition, the organisation estimates that the cost of hydrogen installations could decrease by 40 to 80 % in the long term. This, together with the falling cost of renewable energies and the development of more mature electrolysis equipment, could open the door for this technology to become increasingly profitable. How do you think this increased profitability will affect sectors such as transport?<\/p>\n

It is clear that the lower cost of this technology will contribute very positively to its development in this sector, allowing a reduction in the prices of vehicles powered by fuel cells and, consequently, making them more accessible to citizens who do not have a high purchasing power.<\/strong><\/p>\n

However, it is not enough just to reduce the price of hydrogen installations; in order for this technology to be competitive in this sector, it is necessary to create a network of hydrogen plants, so that those who purchase a vehicle using this technology can refuel without major complications.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Achieving both of these factors will make hydrogen a serious competitor to traditional vehicles. Moreover, the new environmental policies that seek to promote the energy transition in this sector, increasingly tightening the permissible levels of pollution for fossil fuels, will end up tipping the balance in favour of these technologies.<\/strong><\/p>\n

-Industrial sovereignty, green reindustrialisation… in various current debates on the importance of energy for the social and economic fabric, hydrogen is beginning to be seen as a key element for the future. How do you think the development of a hydrogen economy can generate new industrial and economic opportunities for a country like Spain? What role can the CNH2 play in this future context?<\/p>\n

The so-called hydrogen economy could play a very important role in the country’s future due to several factors. Firstly, Spain is probably one of the most suitable countries for the production of so-called green hydrogen, as it has the necessary infrastructure to produce it.<\/strong><\/p>\n

This infrastructure has been the result of the country’s commitment to climate change and national and European policies aimed at reducing emissions, which have led to the promotion of renewable energies, mainly wind and photovoltaic, in Spain in recent years. This has led to the installation of large photovoltaic parks and wind farms. Therefore, the installation of hydrogen production systems that take advantage of the potential of these infrastructures to generate green hydrogen could turn the country into one of the major producers at international level.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The CNH2 has extensive experience in hydrogen production and transformation, and is at the disposal of all those companies and organisations – both public and private – that wish to learn about hydrogen technologies and their operation. It also offers the possibility of participating in the execution of projects and prototypes aimed at implementing these technologies, either through collaboration agreements, consultancy and training services, or through subcontracting agreements.<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
