This research area comprises three cross sectional aspects that affect all activities involving hydrogen, including reviewing applicable regulations in each case, certification or accreditation of the corresponding laboratories, and hydrogen installations and equipment safety.
In regards to the Regulations, our overall goal is to lay the foundations in regards to the current regulatory framework by undertaking an updated identification and review of all regulations concerning hydrogen and fuel cells technologies, both as a whole and in terms of their application as well as on the individual equipment level.
For this reason, CNH2 plays an active role in European standardisation bodies (CEN, CENELEC and ETSI), as well as the national Technical Standardisation Committees (CTN, as per its Spanish acronym) such as the CTN181 “Hydrogen Technologies”, CTN206/SC105 “Fuel Cell Technologies” and CTN 218 “Energy Storage Systems”.
Regarding certification or accreditation, our goal is to obtain accredited laboratories in order to carry out specific tests to allow for the validation and/or certification pursuant to current regulations. More specifically, we are taking the required steps to obtain an accredited laboratory for the certification of fuel cells, and a storage laboratory in order to certify tanks pursuant to the current regulations.
In terms of safety, CNH2 works on both the review of specific safety technologies and equipment as well as on the electrical installations executed in classified areas due to the presence of explosive atmospheres according to the ATEX directives. Furthermore, we also work on the research of leaks in enclosed spaces by using CFD simulation tools in order to scale the hydrogen extraction and detection systems. This is why CNH2 is part of HySAFE and PESI.
