The “Centro Nacional de Experimentación de Tecnologías de Hidrógeno y Pilas de Combustible” or Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Technology Experimentation National Center (CNH2), is a nationwide research center based in Puertollano (Ciudad Real). It was created in December 2007 as a public consortium between the Ministry of Education and Science, now the Ministry of Economy, Industry and Competitiveness, and the Regional Government of Castilla-La Mancha, with a share of 50% each.
Its creation was a response to stimulate the research of future technologies like hydrogen and fuel cells, and in which Spain has an advantage over other countries that lead these technologies: its leading role in the development of renewable energy. Hydrogen and fuel cell technologies are being driven in their use as energy storage of the energy produced from renewable energies: as a complete alternative to fossil fuels, to reduce their randomness, and as an energy carrier with many applications, both in transport and stationary systems. This impulse received by the technologies related to hydrogen from some 30 years ago, result now in the first niche markets which begin to open at international level, and with more difficulties, in Spain.
The CNH2 seeks to lead the national strategy in the identified areas, combining activities carried out by research, development and technological innovation groups, with the main purpose to benefit the industrial sectors with the results obtained. For this, the CNH2, while promoting the accomplishment of key projects that could serve as seed for other ones and act as reference projects, must assume the fulfilment of activities not covered now by the science-technology-industry national system.
Currently, the CNH2 is a recognized institution in the sector and participates actively in all forums related with its technology scope.
Locally, the CNH2 maintains close contact with industrial and technological first level actors (REPSOL, ELCOGAS, ISFOC, IBERDROLA, ENCASUR, …), working on the development of joint interest projects, focused on industrial and technological development component, as well as training and outreach activities. It also collaborates closely with the University of Castile-La Mancha (UCLM), with whom he has a framework agreement and is a strategic supporter of its Campus of Excellence, CyTEMA.
Nationwide, the CNH2 is active member of in different technological platforms: the hydrogen and fuel cells one, PTEHPC, the industrial safety one, PESI, and electricity networks one, FUTURED. As well as the two national industry associations: the Spanish Association Hydrogen (AeH2) and the Fuel Cell Spanish Association (APPICE). He is also a member of AENOR (taking part in technical standardization committees related to hydrogen technologies, CTN-181 and fuel cells, CTN-206 and is secretary of this subcommittee) and is an accredited member of the Network of Scientific Culture and Innovation Units UCC + i FECYT.
It Develops projects in collaboration with companies in the energy sector, hydrogen and fuel cell technologies (ENDESA, ENAGAS, NATURAL GAS, FCC AQUALIA Abengoa Hidrógeno TECNALIA, etc.) and has signed agreements with the major national research centers (CSIC, CIEMAT, INTA, IREC) and universities (UNED, UCO, US, UPV, UCM, UPCT, …).
Internationally, the Centre is member of N.ERGHY, the association of research centers within the FCH2-JU (Fuel Cell and Hydrogen Joint Undertaking) and of HYSAFE (Safety of Hydrogen as an Energy Carrier ).
